The Age of Dreams

364 TIC - 450 TIC

"The Age of Dreams was a time of peace and prosperity. Advances were made in medicine, agriculture and crafts, while even greater strides took place in the lore of magic. Shining cities lay spread across the land enjoying bountiful harvests, profitable trade and cultural exchange. It was a golden age... but the price for this age of dreams was the blood of freedom."

- Cal Tarik, Lore Master and Historian, Ithell

Upon attaining the throne, Emperor Thull XI, the Merciless, immediately began a campaign of political pacification. He, like his father, was an Alliance member. The Alliance became more and more involved in politics and wielded more power. As it did, the empire became more corrupt and brutal in its dealings with its subjects. Historians believe that the Alliance was not wholly responsible for these changes. Some texts mention abnormal behavior in Thull XI even as a young child. His mental state only became less stable with age.

The peoples of the many nations were divided in their views. Some nations welcomed the reign of this new governmental structure. Some opposed it. Civil wars were fought and rebellions were quelled. Soon the Alliance and the Empire dominated the eastern half of Ithria. As their borders expanded, political tensions with the Traxx Legion and the Irenni League grew. By the year 404 on the Thullian Imperial Calendar, most resistance in eastern Ithria had been quelled and the Age of Dreams was declared. Actually, historians mark the Age of Dreams beginning in 364 TIC when Thull XI took the throne. The Age of Dreams is aptly named. Although, the original goal of Thull XI was world domination, he only managed to annex several small nations and fight a few civil wars before his death. Thull XII, the Just, rose to the throne and an age of peace followed.

The most significant series of events during the Age of Dreams surrounds a young human mage named Alrem Evarel. Alrem, born in 410 TIC, apprenticed to a mage that the history books do not name. By the age of 25, Alrem claimed a seat on the Alliance Council, becoming the youngest Mage Lord in history. A powerful and arrogant man, Alrem was subject to severe mood swings, eccentricity and what many considered to be insanity. Alrem devoted his life to the magic and conducted research in several areas of magical phenomena.

Alrem’s breakthrough came when, in the year of 439 TIC, he discovered that Drellikar was putting out a tremendous amount of energy... magical energy. Raw, unfocused magic was pouring out of their sun and into space... unused and wasted. Initial quantitative studies suggested that if 1% of the energy could be harnessed, a city of mages could be powered.

After five years of research, Alrem made a second stunning discover. The magical energy being put out by Drellikar was interfering with the natural flow of magic on Khoras, acting like a form of static. He surmised that mages had never known their true potential due to this phenomenon. This evidence further supported the theory that if the energy of the sun could be harnessed, true magic would be within the grasp of mortals. His theories were met with spectrum of reactions - disbelief, ridicule, amusement, support. Most dismissed it as another stage of eccentricity. Emperor Thull XII was a strong critic of Alrem and, in 444 TIC, ordered him to discontinue work.

Alrem went into seclusion after his theories were ignored. Exhausting his personal funds, Alrem devoted six years to a single project. The theories behind this project were so revolutionary and the scheme so grand, that this single work would eventually usher in the next age of history. However, Emperor Thull XII was furious that Alrem had continued his research and imprisoned him to await execution.
