These dreaded creatures are aptly named. They appear to be small brown bats with a wing span of about 50 centimeters. The wings have rigid leading edges formed by a very sharp chitinous material that can cut as effectively as a sharpened blade.
Razor bats have a very direct method of hunting. They will swarm out at night, searching for prey. They use their highly sensitive sense of smell to find prey. The swarm then descends and makes concerted attacks by flying by and cutting the prey with their wing tips. A single swarm consists of several hundred bats and can cut a humanoid creature to ribbons in a single pass. Each attack will be unidirectional and it takes several seconds for the swarm to reorient and position themselves for another attack. Because all of the bats pass by in the same direction, a large shield is an effective defense. Heavy plate armor is also effective at protecting an individual from a swarm of razor bats. Because the swam can be thwarted by armor or shield, razor bats will favor targets with no such protection.
Once the prey has been killed or incapacitated, the swarm will descend on the body and begin feeding. Razor bats are carnivorous. Razor bat swarms have been known to carry off the bodies of their prey in order to feast on their prize without interference from other predators or other interruptions (such as the friends of the victim). A single swarm is usually enough to lift an average sized humanoid.
Razor bat swarms dislike fire and smoke. A single flaming torch will not deter a swarm, but a well placed fireball spell will kill a swarm outright. A large amount of smoke, fog or gas might also deter a swarm.
Razor bats are found primarily in the Desolation of Shidar, but swarms have been seen in the northern half of the Chaddamar Theocracy and they do seem to be spreading. Thankfully, razor bat swarms are rare, but this is a growing concern for the Theocracy. They lair in shallow rocky caves and tree hollows.
Razor bats are nocturnal and hunt mostly in the evening after the sun sets. During horde season, razor bats become scavengers and feed on the mangled corpses left behind by the horde. They have even been known to steal meals from the horde.
Razor bats are edible and, surprisingly, quite tasty. Other than their blade like wings, they have no other interesting biological aspects. They are not valuable alchemically. They can not be trained as pets. Razor bats are little more than a dangerous pest and have little value.
